# What Is an Evidence Boundary in AI-Assisted Operations?

Engineering blog · JCEE Labs · 2026-10-05 · Version 1.0

An evidence boundary separates what a result supports from what remains unestablished. Learn how to evaluate AI-assisted workflows without overstating the evidence.

## A result needs its conditions

An evidence boundary separates what a result supports from what remains unestablished. For AI-assisted operations, that means identifying the workflow, conditions, observations, and limitations behind a claim.

Consider a synthetic order-review test. Software compares a purchase-order instruction with an entered sales-order record and identifies a missing freight account.

If the system produces the expected classifications across the test cases, that supports a statement about those cases and conditions. It does not establish how often the discrepancy occurs in customer operations, whether staff save time, or whether changing the order would be authorized. Those are separate questions requiring separate evidence.

## What to include in an evidence boundary

Make the claim and its supporting conditions explicit.

- What was evaluated? Record the workflow, software version, and specific claim.
- Under what conditions? Record test inputs, environment, assumptions, and exclusions.
- What was observed? Preserve the actual result, including failures and unresolved outcomes.
- What does it support? State the narrow conclusion justified by those observations.
- What remains open? Identify missing evidence and the next question to test.

## Evidence and permission answer different questions

Evidence can support a judgment that something needs attention. Permission determines whether a particular action may proceed.

Finding a mismatch does not itself authorize a correction. Likewise, approval to attempt a correction does not prove that it succeeded. Human control over AI actions depends on keeping those distinctions visible.

## How JCEE uses the idea

The JCEE Assurance Method separates observation, judgment, authorization, and recording. Our Public Registry records published milestones with their stated boundaries.

The purpose is to make a result usable without asking the reader to assume more than the evidence establishes.

Before relying on a result, ask: What was tested, what happened, and what would have to be shown before we use it in a different setting?
